The Art of Aging: How to Care for Your Concrete

Concrete is durable, but it’s not invincible. Here is how to keep your Jbird pieces looking fresh for longer.

You just unpacked your new concrete piece—it’s heavy, smooth, and looks great in your space. But unlike plastic or ceramic, concrete is a "living" material. It has pores. It breathes. It develops a patina over time.

While we seal every single item before it leaves our studio to protect against moisture, a little bit of love goes a long way.

Here are the 3 Golden Rules of Concrete Care:

1. The "Wipe It Now" Rule: Concrete is porous. Even with a high-quality sealer, if you let red wine, lemon juice, or olive oil sit on the surface for hours, it can eventually seep in.

  • The Fix: Wipe up spills as soon as they happen.

  • The Daily Clean: A simple damp cloth is usually enough. If you need a deeper clean, use mild dish soap and warm water. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers—they will eat away the sealer and expose the raw concrete.

2. Avoid the Acids: This is the big one. Acids are concrete’s kryptonite.

  • Watch out for: Vinegar, lemon juice, citrus-based cleaners, and wine.

  • Why? Acid reacts with the cement paste and can etch the surface (leave a dull spot). If you are using our trays for a coffee station or bar, just be mindful of drips!

3. The "Spa Day" (Optional but Recommended): Think of your concrete like a wood cutting board. Every 6-12 months, it loves a little refresh.

  • What to do: You can apply a thin layer of food-safe beeswax, carnauba wax, or even Pledge! Rub it in with a soft cloth, let it sit for 10 minutes, and buff it off. This fills in microscopic pores and brings back that rich, satin sheen.

Enjoy the Patina

Finally, remember that your piece is meant to be used. Over the years, it might pick up small scratches or slight color changes. Don't stress about it. This patina tells the story of your home.
